How can I hear the TV more clearly without turning up the volume? This is a hot topic in my seminar 'Learn How to Hear Better'. Understanding some TV dialogs is difficult even for normal hearing people. But, when you have a hearing loss you almost certainly will turn-up the TV volume beyond the comfort level of everyone else in the house. During my seminar I recommend and demonstrate the following devices. Activate Closed Captioning Once the viewers become accustomed to the dialogue displaying on the screen the hearing audience will not be distracted, the hearing impaired audience will be able to understand the show and everyone will again enjoy his/her TV viewing. Closed Captioning is especially helpful on rental movies. Wireless Speakers Hook-up wireless speakers and place them next to your chair. The closer the speakers are to you the clearer you will hear! Surround sound is absolutely the worst alternative since it drowns out the TV dialog instead of enhancing it. Wireless Headphones Wireless headphones give the clearest TV reception. The transmitting unit whether it is an infrared or FM transmitter is connected to the TV and then broadcasts the sound directly to the headphones and into your ear. Because you control the volume on your headphones the TV sound can be at its normal loudness and everyone in the family can enjoy the TV. In fact, everyone in the family could have his/her own headphone receiver. While we're on this subject - the above devices have been successfully used in our home by my wife Jacki and me.
